In the summer of 1927, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven writes to Peggy Guggenheim, seeking support for a modelling studio in Paris. With prophetic euphoria and apocalyptic urgency, she outlines a vision for a space dedicated to a new type of ‘body expression’: the transformation of ‘spirit’ into ‘plastic’. Part poem, part Dadaist play, part philosophy, this mythical exposé of her proto-performance art unleashes one of the most intense pieces of gnostic autofiction and demonology to be found in the archives of paramodern heresies. Instead of money, Guggenheim and her then-husband, Lawrence Vail, send back a typescript of the handwritten plea – published here for the first time in its entirety.
With an afterword by the editors.
